Contemporary Wraparound House Extension in Lisvane, Cardiff

Silkmann Architects completed the design of this bespoke rear and side wraparound extension to a detached family home located in Lisvane, Cardiff. The project was carefully designed to create a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area while maintaining the traditional architectural character of the existing property.

The extension extends approximately 3 metres deep across a 12-metre-wide rear elevation, incorporating a low mono-pitch roof that blends seamlessly with the original house design. The proposal also introduced a practical utility room and a compact home office to support modern family living and flexible working requirements.

Designed in a classic and traditional architectural style, the extension complements the proportions, materials and appearance of the existing detached house while significantly improving the internal functionality and connection to the garden.

A key challenge of the project involved the structural coordination required to achieve the large open-plan space while working with restricted ground floor ceiling heights. To overcome this, close collaboration with the structural engineer allowed the primary steel beam supporting the first-floor rear wall to be integrated within the ceiling joist zone, minimising visual impact and maintaining comfortable ceiling proportions throughout the new living space.

Silkmann Architects provided:

  • Measured building survey
  • Existing and proposed architectural drawings
  • Planning application drawings
  • Annotated construction drawings for contractor pricing
  • 3D architectural visualisations

The 3D visuals played an important role in helping the client fully understand the scale, layout and appearance of the proposed extension before construction commenced.

This Cardiff house extension project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can transform a traditional family home into a bright, open and functional contemporary living environment while respecting the original character of the property.

Modern First Floor Extension Creating a New Master Bedroom & Ensuite, Newport.

At Silkmann Architects, we designed this contemporary first floor extension to create a spacious new master bedroom with a private ensuite while enhancing the overall character of the existing home.

The project replaced an outdated flat roof structure with a carefully designed first floor addition, transforming the appearance of the property and creating a more balanced architectural form. The proposed extension was finished with modern fibre cement cladding, adding texture, durability, and a contemporary aesthetic that complements the existing house.

The design focused on maximising natural light, improving the internal layout, and ensuring the new extension integrated seamlessly with the original property. Through thoughtful planning and detailed design, the extension not only provided valuable additional living space but also significantly enhanced the visual quality and long-term value of the home.

From concept design and planning drawings to 3D visualisations, Silkmann Architects delivered a tailored residential extension solution designed around modern family living.

Modern Rear Extension & Side Porch Extension in Cardiff

Silkmann Architects designed this contemporary rear extension for a semi-detached home in Cardiff to transform the ground floor layout and create a brighter, more functional living environment tailored to modern family life.

The project involved demolishing an existing smaller extension and replacing it with a larger, more refined contemporary addition that maximises space, natural light, and the connection to the rear garden. The new rear extension was designed to accommodate an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, creating a spacious and sociable heart of the home. Large bi-fold doors open directly onto the garden, enhancing indoor-outdoor living and allowing natural light to flood the space.

A flat roof design was proposed to achieve higher internal ceilings and create a more open, modern feel throughout the extension. Carefully positioned roof lights were introduced to bring daylight deep into the middle section of the house, significantly improving the quality of the internal spaces.

In addition to the rear extension, a new side porch extension was designed to provide a practical entrance area alongside a shower room and utility space, improving both the functionality and flow of the home.

From concept design and planning drawings to 3D visualisations, Silkmann Architects delivered a bespoke home extension solution that enhances everyday living while adding long-term value and architectural character to the property.
